This unassuming little store, recently opened at 511 Divisadero St. (between Oak & Fell) in San Francisco, has a large variety of traditional truffles and incredible prices – $0.50/ea! For $1.00 you can get a cup of coffee (which I haven’t tried, so can’t attest to) and one truffle. With these prices, Sarah & I tried out a 20-piece assortment; at $10, it’s pretty hard to go wrong! For a few dollars more, you can get the truffles in a nice gift box with a bow (otherwise you get little chinese take-out-style boxes).
The owner used to work for the also-excellent-but-much-more-expensive XOX Truffles, and it shows – I very much doubt I could tell the two apart in a taste test. The mocha and kahlua truffles were my favorites, with a rich, dark chocolate and heavy, heady coffee essence. The coconut was also great, rolled in toasted coconut rather than cocoa powder like most of the rest. The Earl Gray was unusual, but a little too floral for my taste.
We’re very happy to have Five-star in our ‘hood, although our waistlines may not be! They even have a few vegan truffles, something I have but rarely seen.
